This Is Now :: A FaceTime Photoshoot Experience

This is a pretty remarkable time in history, right? Social distancing is the new normal. Wearing masks in public is a good idea. We’re staying home to stay safe and keep everybody else safe as well. Covid-19 has changed the way we’re going about life.

And it has sure changed when, how and if we have a photo shoot. Or a big party/public gathering like a wedding. At least for awhile.

But this doesn’t mean we can’t document our life in the midst of a pandemic. FaceTime photoshoots allow us to keep working together and making art. And memories.

Finding space to laugh and simply enjoy your family can be harder than expected during a pandemic. With this FaceTime Photo Shoot, we had fun getting dressed, taking turns holding the camera and, with Ryan’s help, finding good lighting for each other. We had so much fun and would recommend it to any family, couple or single person who feels cooped up right now.

I’d love to shoot with you! You’ll need an iPhone/iPad, a window, and a sense of fun. I mean, really, what do you or I have going on right now that gets in the way?!

Once we’re on our FaceTime call, we’ll look around your home together and find some fun spots to make some images. I’ll help you get situated and off we go!

How Does It Work?

I’ll call you via FaceTime at our session time. Once we’re connected, I’ll ask you to give me a quick tour of possible locations inside or outside your home. We’re looking for good light and either neutral backgrounds or locations with interesting features. I’ll be guiding you through your phone! Rad!

If it’s just one person, two of you, or a family, you’ll either be holding the phone or finding a way to prop it up. Books are helpful to lean a phone against. Some tape can help affix your phone to a salt shaker or a heavy glass. Got to get a little creative here. Lego phone holder? I’ll be guiding you as far as phone placement goes and be posing you as much as possible. The idea is to get as close to a standard shoot as possible. It’s new! And different! All right!

What about the style of my shoot?

We can go so many different and unique ways. Ir’s really up to you. Here are some possibilities to get you thinking:

  1. Family Shoot - We’ll make some great portraits from inside your home during this remarkable time. Individuals and groups. Kids playing. Etc.

  2. Emotional Inventory - Let’s face it, it’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster these days. Let’s make series of portraits showing how you feel.

  3. Couples Lifestyle Shoot - Just the two of you. Doing what you’re doing while staying home. Watching a movie with popcorn, snuggling on the couch, whatever. Or we can make some more straightforward portraits.

  4. Pandemic Chic - You know, gloves, masks… Could also be the pandemic happy hour, dance party or meditation moment.

  5. Pandemic Vignettes - A series of photos in one location doing a number of stay at home activities, i.e. reading, having a cup of coffee, playing a board game, watching t.v. knitting, looking super bored etc.

  6. Artsy Portraits - Let’s get creative and make a portrait the unique and interesting. Let’s shoot through some plants find weird light. It’s a strange time, your portrait could reflect that reality.
